Ford has quite a few ways of naming their performance models but I’m not 100% on what the hierarchy is or what the defining characteristics for denoting which badge a vehicle would receive. Help me out here.

I can think of ST, SVT, Sport, RS, SHO, Shelby, and I guess the GT is a subset of Ford Racing. Is there a scheme to here? Why don’t I have a Fusion ST or even a SHO (since the Taurus will be gone soon)? Can I have a Mustang ST or RS as well as the GT? What would be the difference between an SVT Raptor and a Shelby Raptor at the consumer level?

Does every nameplate just get its own performance badge? Imagine if the Escape, Edge, Explorer, and Expedition had performance variants. All of a sudden I can see the badges coinciding with the class size of the vehicle like so:

Escape ST
Edge Sport and Edge RS
Explorer SHO
SVT Expedition. Could there be a Shelby Bronco? How does this work?!!

That would be the Connect ST since it’s FWD. Granted their natural resting state would be on their sides.

Tell that to the old Taurus SHOs or the SVT Contour and Focus. Ford just pulls a set of letters out of their ass based on which they think sounds good at the time.

The only thing I can add is that the Boostang should be a Mustang ST whereas the V8 is the GT and while we know they won’t do it... A ramped up GT cannibalizing Boostang would be the RS. However a Fiesta RS would be amazing.

Now I want to see a Shelby Raptor. But instead of just a regular souped up Raptor, I want a Rally Fighter fighter. Take a Shelby Mustang and throw the drive train from the Raptor under it.

Yeah, some consistency would be nice. I miss the time when half of Chevy’s products offered a SS version.

Ok here we go

SVT is dead

Ford Racing is dead

Ford Performance is the overall title for all things performance/racing now.

SHO is just a throwback and has never been used on anything other than the Taurus.

Sport has been used on Fusion, Edge and Explorer quite a bit, I have no idea why they didn’t just lump it in with ST for the new Fusion Sport (which is awesome btw). Edge already comes in Sport and has been available with a Sport option for years. Personally I think the EcoBoost Mustang should’ve been the ST.

Expedition has never had a performance option, though I would completely support that.

Finally, ST has been around for a while because of the Focus.

SVT was the sucessor of SVO and now both are dead. SVT was between the European ST and RS and was exclusive to North America (the Mk1 Focus SVT was sold as ST170 in Europe). The new Fiesta ST200 would be like the Fiesta SVT from today. The last SVT was the last gen Raptor.

SHO appears to be exclusive to the Taurus.

Shelby is exclusive to the perfomance versions of the Mustang.

ST, while it sells cars in the US, is mostly a European designation. The Mondeo (Fusion), Kuga (Escape) and other models are availible with a ST-Line design package, and I wouldn`t be suprised if the Fusion Sport would be named Mondeo ST in the EU.

So it’s like this order

RS is the flagship sport variant from Ford EU, similar to VW’s R.
